FRIDAY!!!!!!
I think I'm coming down with something. Woke up with a sore throat and that "I'm getting sick feeling" :( I'll be sure to get 9-10 hours of sleep tonight.
Had toast before workout....
Went to my regular Friday morning hour-long cycle class to burn 475 calories!!! I feel so strong during cycle classes. And it's always a great workout!
Breakfast was pear, almond and PB oatmeal with some ground flax and hot tea....
I've got a GREAT lunch and snack planned today (thanks to my handy husband who packed it for me b/c of my late class). I can't wait to eat them already!
Off to the lightrail!!

not sure if my questions are going through or not. But I've looked all over the internet, and I really can't find if you are supposed to weigh your food before or after you cook it? I made a sweet potato last night, and I weighed it before I baked it and it was pretty heavy. Then I peeled it and cut it up into chips... after it got done baking I weighed it again and it was much lighter. So I would take the weight after, correct? my scale also shows calories in nutition on it, and I can choose if I baked it or boiled it, etc.
Holly,
Your questions are coming through, but I've been really busy and haven't had time to respond. You can weigh food either raw or cooked, but just be sure you look up the calories accordingly in a database.
If you use CalorieKing (my favorite), just look for "sweet potato, raw" if you weigh it raw or "sweet potato, baked in skin" if you weigh it after.
Raw weights are more accurate, so I always try to do raw when I can.
Hope that helps.
Kath
I completely understand, Kath. I just wasn't sure if my comments were going through or not. Thank you so much for answering my question! I'm just confused by all this weighing of things. My scale figures out the calories for me... I typed in Sweeted potato baked in skin, and then I weighed it. And the calories were lower after I baked. So I don't know. I suppose weighing before is more accurate.
Gotcha - I didn't realize your scale told you the calories. I would weigh things raw whenever you can. The reason the calories changes is probably a result of your oven being warmer or cooler than the oven used to bake the sample sweet potato! Although I would hope it would be pretty close. So the reason raw is best is because cooking methods vary.
Good luck with it!

Hey Kath. Happy Friday!
I have a question... how tall are you??
Have a great weekend!
Patricia
5'2" and have been since 8th grade :)
Hi Kath,
I, too, found your blog by way of "Eat Like Me," and I am really enjoying it. It seems like a lot of people who are reading yours also read Cristin's, so I hope you don't mind if I bring up a topic from her blog. I was wondering if you could weigh in on the "debate" that went on regarding her meals yesterday. There are a couple differing opinions (too much? not healthy? just right?) and I am curious to know what yours is, because it seems like you and Cristin, while both having the same goal of eating healthfully to make a positive difference in your lives, go about it different ways. Thanks in advance!
Oops - I posted the last comment and meant to type "too little?" instead of where I typed "too much?" Sorry :)
I also read Cristin's blog, and thought yesterday's intake was way too low. Cristin is young and active and eating 1,200-1,300, as she appeared to yesterday, is ridiculous.
Sometimes I wonder about her relationship with food... everyone claims it is healthy, yet a part of me questions it. I think she may have been "saving up" for her dinner out tonight, but yesterday was a bit extreme and unnecessary.
I just get the feeling she does this more than she should or NEEDS to. (Her language in past posts and her behavior point to this.) What do you guys think? (since I'm pretty sure we all check out her blog regularly too!)
I just posted, but forgot to include this - we also need to keep in mind that she is not trying to LOSE weight, but just maintain (she has posted a few pics in the past and clearly doesn't need to).
I could not agree more. I do not think that Cristin's relationship with food is a healthy one nor one that should be supported by SELF. Her intake is NOT by any standards normal and/or healthy. She has referenced many times that she is "small"... Kath is 5'2''! I find it sad that people who don't know any better may model their eating habits off of Cristin.
I dont think that cristin should be attacked on another blog- that puts kath in a bad situation- I agree though and I dont like her eating style and feel that kaths is 100% better (just do what I did and stop reading it)... thanks
most days when i look at Cristin's blog I get so upset and say to myself "REALLY!" That's alll she ate? I find it do hard to believe sometimes. So that's why lately instead of trying to "eatlikeher" and depress myself.. i just look at some of the things she eats as examples and ideas for myself when I shop for food and eat at school. I have no clue if she's healthy.. has a problem.. eats enough calories.. and im done trying to figure it out!! because will we ever?
Hey-
I just want to say that I find Kath's blog so refreshing, inspiring, healthy, and realistic. I think that is why we all love it!
Also Kath, I wanted to let you know that I went and bought the Polar F4 you suggested and love it!!! I like knowing what I burn, plus I think I work out harder because I like to see a big calorie burn :) Thanks - Tiffany
Let's be a little classier than to bash Cristin on this blog. It was because of her that many of us found Kath's equally helpful and interesting site. Cristin is not just an entity floating around in cyberspace, she is a real person who does a SERVICE to all of us by taking time out every single day to photograph and record all of her food intake, just like Kath. Believe me, I know it's easy to get caught up in calories here, exercise there, but there are more important things such as having respect for other human beings--hardworking ones, at that. I'm sure Cristin would rather us ask her a question about her intake than have to bash her on this blog. I don't think Kath would condone her readers insulting Cristin, either...
I was the first person who posted about Cristin's blog, and my intention was NOT to "bash" her. Having an open discussion is not possible on her site, because of the league of people who shut the discussion down anytime it questions a choice Cristin made. PLEASE don't let that kind of discussion get shut down on this blog, too. Everyone has different opinions.
I was going to say - Cristin's "league" has now found their way on this blog. God forbid we have any opinion at all or say anything that does not praise her every bite.
I think a lot of people that post on her blog need to get a reality check. It's perfectly ok to have differing opinions... if anything it helps make people think in different ways, gain more knowledge and grow.
I acknowledge that Crisin works hard and that, really, she seems like a genuinely kind, smart person.
I still feel I, and everyone, have a right to disagree and question what she posts. Diagreements and doubts are a part of life. I hope these same people don't act this way in their real lives too... Grow up.
Oops typo - "disagreements", not "diagreements", in the last paragraph.
Hi Guys,
About Cristin's blog... "To each her own," right? If she just wasn't that hungry that day, then she wasn't hungry. She did eat a menu of nutritious foods, and that's what's most important. If she were eating nothing but junk, that's when we should start to ask questions, but not one day of light eating.
I don't think that anyone can dispute that Cristin eats healthy and has a healthy relationship with food. If we were consistently seeing her eat very small amounts, then perhaps that might be something to bring up, but ONE DAY!?!? Not an issue for me. I have days when I don't hit net because I'm too busy or just have light foods, and I also have days when I double my net - oops! There's so much more to eating than just the food itself - social circumstances, economic reasons, a busy career, and time constraints, etc. that we all can't eat perfectly all the time.
I've seen Cristin eat too little and I've seen her eat too much, but what is most important is that she eats healthy 99% of the time. It's all about balance, right?
Kath
well-said kath. even though my eating habits are more like yours, and thus i can relate better to your blog than cristin's, i think it's really sad that she is constantly attacked. i hope she doesn't find her way to the mean comments people have posted here, she deals w it enough in her blog and i'm sure it is hurtful. give the poor girl a break, right??
